Thai clock time and calendar dates

Numbers for a clock and calendar

Build larger numbers from the one-to-ten words you know.

สิบเอ็ด is eleven. From twelve to nineteen, put สิบ before the unit: สิบสอง, twelve, and สิบเก้า, nineteen. Twenty is the special ยี่สิบ; thirty is สามสิบ. Other tens follow the same pattern, such as ห้าสิบ, fifty.

At the end of these compound numbers, one is เอ็ด: ยี่สิบเอ็ด, twenty-one, and สามสิบเอ็ด, thirty-one. Other units stay familiar: ยี่สิบห้า, twenty-five. On its own, one is still หนึ่ง.

Printed schedules often use digits. 08:15 and 8:15 give the same time in a 24-hour schedule. This block uses ordinary digits in dates and schedules; reading large year numbers and Thai numeral shapes is separate practice.

Use the whole number in a time or date. The number pattern does not itself tell you which part of the day a spoken clock phrase belongs to.

The final one changes in these compounds, not every occurrence of one.

The hour word changes with the day

Use the clock phrase, not just its number, to identify the time.

For 01:00–05:00, put ตี before the number: ตีสาม is 03:00. From 06:00 to 11:00, one common form is the hour number followed by โมงเช้า: หกโมงเช้า is 06:00 and เจ็ดโมงเช้า is 07:00. Noon is เที่ยง; midnight is เที่ยงคืน. You may also hear other established morning counting styles.

For 13:00–15:00, use บ่าย: บ่ายโมง is 13:00 and บ่ายสามโมง is 15:00. For 16:00–18:00, a common form is the number followed by โมงเย็น: สี่โมงเย็น is 16:00 and ห้าโมงเย็น is 17:00. Other afternoon expressions are also used; these are clear forms to start with.

The evening count restarts at one: หนึ่งทุ่ม is 19:00 and สามทุ่ม is 21:00. Add ครึ่ง for half past: สองทุ่มครึ่ง is 20:30. For other minutes, add the minute number and นาที, as in เจ็ดโมงเช้าสิบห้านาที, 07:15.

Formal schedules and announcements can use the 24-hour number followed by นาฬิกา: สิบเก้านาฬิกา is 19:00. Add the minutes with นาที. กี่โมง asks what time; พวกเราจะไปกี่โมง asks what time we will go.

Keep the part-of-day word when an appointment could be unclear. For example, สามทุ่มครึ่ง is 21:30: ครึ่ง adds half an hour to the time named before it.

Keep the hour word with the number so that the time is clear.

A weekday is not a date number

Use the day name for a weekday and the date marker before a day number.

วันนี้วันอะไร asks which weekday today is; วันนี้วันที่เท่าไร asks today’s date number. วันจันทร์ means Monday. วันที่ห้า means the fifth day of the month, not the fifth weekday.

Put the day number before the month: วันที่สิบสองมีนาคม is 12 March. Add the year when needed. The vocabulary section contains all seven weekdays and twelve months; learn their names as whole words.

A plan can combine both: พวกเราจะเรียนวันพุธตอนสามทุ่ม says we will study on Wednesday at 21:00. ฉันจะไปวันที่ยี่สิบเมษายน gives a calendar date instead. The action word stays unchanged.

Thai documents often label the Buddhist Era as พ.ศ. and the Common Era as ค.ศ.. For modern calendar years, พ.ศ. 2569 and ค.ศ. 2026 name the same year: the difference is 543. Check the label before comparing year numbers. This block does not ask you to read the full year number aloud.

วันนี้วันที่เท่าไร

Weekday and date questions need different answers. A date does not tell you its weekday unless you also check the calendar. Shortened day or month names occur in schedules; learn these full forms first.

Keep the year’s era label; a larger printed year is not automatically a later event.

The same hour can have different numbers

สามทุ่ม and ยี่สิบเอ็ดนาฬิกา both name 21:00. The everyday evening count starts again, while the formal system counts through the day. Hearing a small number therefore does not mean it is morning. Keep the hour word with the number.
