Thai numbers and counting words: people, books and drinks
Start with one to ten
Learn each number as a complete written word.
The word list gives หนึ่ง for one through สิบ for ten. Learn the full spelling, including any vowel or tone signs.
In these counting phrases, the noun comes first, then the number, then a counting word called a classifier. ครูสองคน means two teachers. The noun ครู keeps its spelling.
หนังสือสามเล่ม means three books. This is a quantity phrase, not a complete statement about where the books are or who owns them.
ครูสองคนtwo teachers
หนังสือสามเล่มthree books
หนังสือหนึ่งเล่มone book
This block uses the number word before the classifier, including with one. Other useful ways to express one item come later. Larger numbers, prices and times have their own blocks.
Learn the counting word with the noun
Use คน for the people here, เล่ม for books and แก้ว for glasses of a drink.
Use คน for the teachers, students and doctors in these examples. หมอสามคน means three doctors. Learn the counting word with the noun.
For books, use เล่ม: หนังสือสองเล่ม means two books. Learn the pairing with the noun; you cannot reliably guess every classifier from the shape of the object.
For a drink served in glasses, น้ำสองแก้ว means two glasses of water. Here แก้ว tells you the serving unit. A bottle or another container needs a different word.
หมอสามคนthree doctors
หนังสือสองเล่มtwo books
น้ำสองแก้วtwo glasses of water
ชาหนึ่งแก้วone glass of tea
Some classifiers classify individual things; others express a serving or measure. Thai has more than these three, including special terms in particular settings. This small set is a useful starting point, not a universal rule.
These examples count glasses of a drink, not empty drinking vessels.
How many or which one?
Replace a number with กี่; put ไหน after the counting word to ask which one.
มีน้ำกี่ขวด asks how many bottles of water there are. The phrase keeps the order noun, question word, counting word: น้ำ, กี่, ขวด. Compare มีน้ำสามขวด, there are three bottles of water.
คุณอยากได้น้ำขวดไหน asks which bottle of water you want. Here the order is noun, counting word, ไหน. It selects a bottle; it does not ask how many bottles or where they are.
น้ำขวดนี้ราคาเท่าไร asks how much this bottle of water costs. The price word ราคา makes the dimension clear. เท่าไหร่ is also a common spelling of this question word. Do not replace the quantity question with a price question.
มีน้ำกี่ขวดHow many bottles of water are there?
มีน้ำสามขวดThere are three bottles of water.
คุณอยากได้น้ำขวดไหนWhich bottle of water do you want?
น้ำขวดนี้ราคาเท่าไรHow much does this bottle of water cost?
After context makes the noun clear, ขวดไหน can be enough for which bottle. Keep the full noun phrase while learning the order; omission is not a different counting rule.
The price pattern here names price explicitly. This question word can ask other amounts or degrees in other contexts.
The portion changes the count
Choose the unit you mean; อะไรบ้าง asks about a range of options.
น้ำสองขวด means two bottles of water; น้ำสองแก้ว means two glasses of water. The substance is the same, but the unit changes. ข้าวสองจาน counts two plates of rice, not two individual grains.
กาแฟสองถ้วย counts two cups of coffee. A glass or cup can both be a sensible serving, depending on the container. Our questions state the intended unit, so a different real-world container is not treated as an impossible phrase.
มีอาหารอะไรบ้าง asks what food options are available. In this question, บ้าง invites a range of relevant answers. It does not promise a fixed number of options or mean that every possible food exists.
น้ำสองขวดTwo bottles of water.
น้ำสองแก้วTwo glasses of water.
ข้าวสองจานTwo plates of rice.
กาแฟสองถ้วยTwo cups of coffee.
มีอาหารอะไรบ้างWhat food options are available?
Here, บ้าง comes after อะไร to ask what is available. It has other uses too. The counting word tells us what object or serving we mean, not whether a noun is masculine or feminine.
The container examples are common choices, not a claim that every noun has exactly one possible counting word.
A counting word is not a plural ending
In หนังสือสองเล่ม, the noun หนังสือ does not gain a plural ending. The quantity phrase includes a number and a classifier. With drinks, the counting word can also tell you the serving size: น้ำสองแก้ว specifies two glasses, not just an unspecified amount of water.
Count the serving, not just the substance
น้ำสองขวด and น้ำสองแก้ว both say two servings of water, but the first counts bottles and the second glasses. The number stays the same; the container changes. We still need to know their sizes to compare how much water they hold.
