Thai possibilities and plans: may, probably and about to
Possible or likely
These words express the speaker’s stance, not measured percentages.
ฝนอาจจะตก says it may rain. นัทคงอยู่ที่บ้าน says Nat is probably at home. In a prediction context, นัทน่าจะอยู่ที่บ้าน also expresses a likely expectation.
อาจ can occur with or without จะ. The same is true of คง. The presence of จะ in these patterns does not by itself prove that the event is in the future; time still comes from context.
ฝนอาจจะตกIt may rain.
นัทคงอยู่ที่บ้านNat is probably at home.
นัทน่าจะอยู่ที่บ้านNat is probably at home. (Expectation.)
นัทอาจอยู่ที่บ้านตอนนี้Nat may be at home now.
Possible, probable and certain are useful contrasts, not fixed numbers. Do not assign every word a universal probability or treat a likely expectation as confirmed fact.
The prediction examples do not prove where Nat actually is.
May not happen or not sure?
Read which part is uncertain or negative.
นัทอาจจะไม่มา says Nat may not come. It leaves not coming as a possibility; it does not say that Nat definitely will not come.
ฉันไม่แน่ใจว่านัทจะมา means I am not sure whether Nat will come. It describes the speaker’s uncertainty; it does not say that Nat will be absent. นัทคงไม่มา means Nat probably will not come.
นัทอาจจะไม่มาNat may not come.
ฉันไม่แน่ใจว่านัทจะมาI am not sure whether Nat will come.
นัทคงไม่มาNat probably will not come.
Keep possibility, expectation and knowledge separate. Being unsure whether somebody will come is not the same as knowing that they will not come.
Uncertainty about an event does not establish the event or its opposite.
Prediction, suggestion or confidence
The setting can change how the same expression is understood.
When you are guessing Nat’s location, นัทน่าจะอยู่ที่บ้าน is an expectation. When a tired friend asks for advice, คุณน่าจะพักก่อน can suggest that the friend should rest first.
ฉันแน่ใจว่านัทจะมา says I am sure Nat will come. It reports the speaker’s confidence, not independent proof that Nat has already arrived.
คุณน่าจะพักก่อนYou should rest first. (Advice to a tired friend.)
ฉันแน่ใจว่านัทจะมาI am sure Nat will come.
Use the action, situation and surrounding words to recognize advice or expectation. A single dictionary gloss cannot decide every use of the expression.
Advice is not the same as an enforced rule or permission.
Intend, about to, or doing?
The whole pattern tells you how the plan relates to the action.
ฉันตั้งใจจะอ่านหนังสือพรุ่งนี้ states my intention to read tomorrow. ฉันกำลังจะอ่านหนังสือ says I am about to read; the action is expected to start soon.
Compare ฉันกำลังอ่านหนังสือ, I am reading. Adding จะ after กำลัง changes the pattern from an ongoing action to one about to begin. An intention by itself does not prove completion or a guaranteed outcome.
ฉันตั้งใจจะอ่านหนังสือพรุ่งนี้I intend to read a book tomorrow.
ฉันกำลังจะอ่านหนังสือI am about to read a book.
ฉันกำลังอ่านหนังสือI am reading a book.
ตั้งใจเรียนStudy attentively. (Expression.)
Read the intention expression as a unit. In a different pattern, ตั้งใจเรียน can mean studying attentively or diligently, rather than simply planning a future lesson.
An action about to start has not necessarily started yet.
Invite someone to join
A question or a suggestion can invite a shared activity.
อ่านหนังสือกันไหม can invite someone to read together: shall we read together? อ่านหนังสือกันเถอะ suggests doing so: let’s read together. The whole invitation makes the shared activity clear.
เถอะ encourages or urges an action; it does not always mean we. พักเถอะ can tell the other person to go ahead and rest. The relationship, wording and tone still matter; the particle does not make every request automatically polite.
อ่านหนังสือกันไหมShall we read together?
อ่านหนังสือกันเถอะLet’s read together.
พักเถอะGo ahead and rest. (Encouragement to the other person.)
In these shared-activity phrases, กัน connects the participants. Do not turn that into a rule requiring this word after every verb with more than one person.
Tone and the relationship between speakers affect how an invitation sounds.
Offer help or ask for help
Keep the helper and the person receiving help distinct.
ให้ฉันช่วยไหม offers my help: would you like me to help? ช่วยฉันหน่อย asks the other person to help me. Follow the person attached to the helping action.
An invitation, offer or intention is not a completed event. The other person can accept or decline. Do not read a proposal as proof that both people have agreed.
ให้ฉันช่วยไหมWould you like me to help?
ช่วยฉันหน่อยPlease help me.
Short conversational expressions often leave a person or object unstated when the situation supplies it. Use only the participants supported by the words and context.
This block practices the clear participant contrast, not every possible wording for an offer.
Probably is not a percentage
Words such as คง express an expectation in context. A cautious voice or another particle can change its force. Learn the distinction from possibility and certainty without memorizing invented numerical odds.
Let’s is a whole invitation
เถอะ can encourage another person alone. In อ่านหนังสือกันเถอะ, the shared-action wording helps make it an invitation to act together. Learn the phrase, not a one-word replacement for let’s.
