Thai story time: before now or before a past moment?
Keep the time setting
Thai verbs do not change their endings to mark past time. The story supplies the time setting.
In เมื่อวานนัทไปโรงเรียน หลังจากนั้นนัทกลับบ้าน, yesterday sets the time and after that continues the sequence. The going and returning do not need separate past endings.
A new time phrase can change the setting. In เมื่อวานนัทไปโรงเรียน วันนี้นัทอยู่ที่บ้าน, today moves the second statement to the present day. Do not carry yesterday across an explicit new time.
เมื่อวานนัทไปโรงเรียน หลังจากนั้นนัทกลับบ้านYesterday Nat went to school. After that, Nat went home.
เมื่อวานนัทไปโรงเรียน วันนี้นัทอยู่ที่บ้านYesterday Nat went to school. Today Nat is at home.
Thai can use time phrases, context and aspect expressions together. Not changing a verb ending does not mean every event has the same time or that time is unimportant.
These short stories give enough context; an isolated verb may leave time open.
At that time or after that
A continuing action can overlap with another event.
ตอนนั้น points to the relevant time already discussed. หลังจากนั้น places an event after the one just discussed. These expressions do not do the same job.
In a past story, ตอนที่ครูโทรมา นัทกำลังอ่านหนังสือ says Nat was reading when the teacher called. The ongoing reading overlaps the call; it is not stated to begin only after the call.
ตอนนั้นนัทอยู่ที่บ้านAt that time, Nat was at home. (Past-story context.)
หลังจากนั้นนัทไปโรงเรียนAfter that, Nat went to school. (Past-story context.)
ตอนที่ครูโทรมา นัทกำลังอ่านหนังสือWhen the teacher called, Nat was reading. (Past story.)
Do not turn every pair of clauses into a strict first-then sequence. A time clause and an ongoing action can describe what was happening when another event occurred.
The surrounding story identifies which time the expression points to.
Just happened, already, or experience
Recent is relative to the relevant situation.
นัทเพิ่งมาถึงบ้าน says Nat has just arrived home. In ตอนนั้นนัทเพิ่งมาถึงบ้าน, a past story can place that recent arrival shortly before the time being discussed, rather than just before now.
นัทมาถึงบ้านแล้ว says Nat has arrived home; it does not necessarily mean just now. นัทเคยไปโรงเรียนนี้ reports experience of going to this school, not a specified recent arrival.
นัทเพิ่งมาถึงบ้านNat has just arrived home.
ตอนนั้นนัทเพิ่งมาถึงบ้านAt that time, Nat had just arrived home. (Past story.)
นัทมาถึงบ้านแล้วNat has arrived home.
นัทเคยไปโรงเรียนนี้Nat has been to this school before.
There is no universal number of minutes for just. The event and the reference point decide what counts as recent. Experience and completion do not automatically give the same timing.
This block covers clear short stories, not every advanced aspect or narrative viewpoint.
Just can belong to a past moment
In a past story, เพิ่ง can place an event shortly before the time being discussed. It does not force the event to have happened shortly before the reader’s present moment.
