Thai results and change: looking, finding and finishing

Looking is not the same as finding

The result word tells you whether the search succeeds.

ฉันหาหนังสือ says I look for a book; it does not promise I find it. ฉันหาหนังสือเจอ says I find the book I am looking for. เจอ gives the successful result after the object here.

ฉันหาหนังสือไม่เจอ says I cannot find the book. In this taught pattern, ไม่ comes before the result word, after the object. Compare ฉันไม่หาหนังสือ: I do not look for the book.

ฉันหาหนังสือ

I look for a book.

ฉันหาหนังสือเจอ

I find the book I am looking for.

ฉันหาหนังสือไม่เจอ

I cannot find the book.

ฉันไม่หาหนังสือ

I do not look for the book.

The action and its result are separate. Negating the result is different from saying the person does not do the action.

Learn these combinations as phrases; do not attach any result word to any verb.

Something comes to mind

The same short word has a different job in this combination.

ฉันนึกชื่อออก says I can recall the name. ฉันนึกชื่อไม่ออก says I cannot bring the name to mind. The name comes between นึก and the result expression here.

ออก often describes going out, but in this remembering phrase it does not describe somebody leaving a room. Another taught combination, ฟังออก, means being able to make out what is said.

ฉันนึกชื่อออก

I can recall the name.

ฉันนึกชื่อไม่ออก

I cannot recall the name.

ฟังออก

Can make out what is said. (Listening context.)

Choose by the whole combination and situation. Remembering a name and finding a book use different result words in the phrases taught here.

The context tells you what the listener can make out.

Finish a task or reach the end

Different activities have familiar finishing combinations.

แม่ทำอาหารเสร็จแล้ว says the mother has finished cooking. เสร็จ marks the task’s completion, followed here by แล้ว. แม่ยังทำอาหารไม่เสร็จ says the mother has not finished cooking yet.

จบ commonly marks reaching the end of content: นัทอ่านหนังสือจบแล้ว says Nat has read the book to the end. Use the taught cooking and book-reading combinations; do not treat the two finishing words as freely interchangeable everywhere.

แม่ทำอาหารเสร็จแล้ว

The mother has finished cooking.

แม่ยังทำอาหารไม่เสร็จ

The mother has not finished cooking yet.

นัทอ่านหนังสือจบแล้ว

Nat has read the book to the end.

A completed cooking task and reaching a book’s final page are different kinds of endpoint. The questions state the activity and request its taught combination.

Completion here does not tell you when the action began.

A state or a change?

A change phrase compares with an earlier state.

น้ำร้อน says the water is hot. น้ำร้อนขึ้น says it gets hotter: there is a change from before. น้ำเย็นลง says the water gets cooler.

ดีขึ้น means getting better, as in นัทดีขึ้นแล้ว. In a conversation about health, Nat is better now. This does not by itself say Nat is completely well.

น้ำร้อน

The water is hot.

น้ำร้อนขึ้น

The water gets hotter.

น้ำเย็นลง

The water gets cooler.

นัทดีขึ้นแล้ว

Nat is better now. (Health context.)

A change phrase needs an earlier state to compare with. It does not need to name a different person or thing after a comparison word.

A change can be small; do not infer complete recovery or an extreme state.

Prices can rise or fall

Up and down do not mean good and bad.

ราคาขึ้น says the price rises; ราคาลง says it falls. Here ราคา is what changes. Compare แม่เปลี่ยนราคา: the mother changes the price.

Learn familiar change combinations as whole phrases. ดีขึ้น is an improvement, while ราคาขึ้น is a higher price. Whether the change is welcome depends on the situation.

ราคาขึ้น

The price rises.

ราคาลง

The price falls.

แม่เปลี่ยนราคา

The mother changes the price.

The direction of change and your opinion about it are different. A falling price can be good for a buyer; a rising price does not guarantee a better product.

A price direction does not tell you how large the change is.

Change something or become something

Look at what changes and whether a new role or state is named.

ฉันเปลี่ยนชื่อ says I change my name. The name is the thing changed; the sentence does not name the new name.

เพื่อนกลายเป็นครู says a friend becomes a teacher. กลายเป็น introduces the new role here, rather than saying the friend changes a teacher. เพื่อนเป็นครู only states the role; it does not itself describe a change.

เปลี่ยนเป็น can also introduce a new state. There is more than one way to express becoming; the natural choice depends on the whole phrase and situation.

ฉันเปลี่ยนชื่อ

I change my name.

เพื่อนกลายเป็นครู

A friend becomes a teacher.

เพื่อนเป็นครู

A friend is a teacher.

Changing a name, describing a role and becoming that role are different messages. Read the whole sentence rather than matching one translation of change everywhere.

The new role alone does not explain why or exactly when the change happened.

An action needs its own result

You can look for a book without finding it, just as you can start cooking without finishing. The result words let a short phrase say whether its goal was reached. They are useful combinations to learn, not interchangeable finishing labels.

Better is not the same as fully well

In a health conversation, ดีขึ้นแล้ว says the condition has improved. It does not promise every problem has gone away. A change word tells you the direction; it does not automatically tell you the final destination.
