GERMAN GRAMMAR · C1

German insofern als and ohne dass: qualify a claim precisely

Use insofern als to specify the respect in which a claim applies. Soweit ich weiß limits a statement to the speaker’s knowledge. Ohne dass describes an event or circumstance that does not occur alongside the main event; it does not by itself explain a cause.

Restrict the respect in which something is true

A favourable assessment may apply to one criterion without endorsing every aspect. Insofern als makes that criterion explicit. Keep the finite verb at the end of the subordinate clause.

Der Vorschlag überzeugt insofern, als er die Kosten senkt.

The proposal is convincing insofar as it reduces costs.

Separate a knowledge limit from a factual restriction

Soweit ich weiß says how far the speaker’s information extends. It does not mean that only part of an event happened, nor does it prove that the information is complete. Preserve this reservation when summarising.

Soweit ich weiß, liegt noch keine Entscheidung vor.

As far as I know, no decision has been made yet.

An absent event is not automatically a cause

Ohne dass can state what did not accompany an action. It leaves the relationship more open than an explicit causal conjunction. A different subordinate subject is possible; do not replace the construction mechanically with an infinitive clause.

Die Sitzung endete, ohne dass eine Entscheidung getroffen wurde.

The meeting ended without a decision being made.
