GERMAN GRAMMAR · B1

German paired connectors: entweder … oder and weder … noch

Learn the partners together: entweder … oder presents alternatives, weder … noch excludes both, sowohl … als auch includes both, and zwar … aber acknowledges one point before adding a contrast. Start by joining comparable words or phrases.

Offer alternatives without changing the phrase structure

Two time phrases or two transport phrases make the alternatives easy to compare. Whole-clause combinations have additional placement choices; do not assume every paired connector behaves identically in every clause pattern.

Wir kommen entweder am Montag oder am Dienstag.

We will come either on Monday or on Tuesday.

Neither/nor already carries negation

The pair excludes both alternatives. Do not add an ordinary extra negation merely to make it negative. The positive pair includes both; the standard variant sowohl … wie auch is also possible.

Das Zimmer hat weder einen Balkon noch eine Terrasse.

The room has neither a balcony nor a terrace.

A qualified contrast still accepts the first statement

With zwar … aber, the first description remains true. The second limits the conclusion you might draw from it. This differs from sondern, which replaces an explicitly denied alternative.

Das Zimmer ist zwar klein, aber ruhig.

The room is admittedly small, but quiet.
