Thai go and come: journeys with a purpose
Two verbs can describe one journey
In เดินไปตลาด, walking describes how the person goes to the market.
ผมเดินไปตลาด means I walk to the market. เดิน says how I travel; ไป gives the direction toward the market. Together they describe one journey.
ผมจะไปซื้อหนังสือ says I will go to buy books; no number is specified. The movement word comes before the buying activity. This short pattern does not need และ, and, between the verbs.
ผมจะกลับบ้านกินข้าว means I will go home to eat. Going home comes before the intended meal. จะ presents the plan; the verbs themselves do not change form.
ผมเดินไปตลาดI walk to the market.
ผมจะไปซื้อหนังสือI will go to buy books.
ผมจะกลับบ้านกินข้าวI will go home to eat.
Do not join any two verbs at random or assume every chain has the same relation. Walking plus going can describe one path; going plus buying can state the purpose of that journey. Longer sequences are taught later.
This block teaches a few useful connected patterns, not a rule that every pair of actions must omit and.
Go or come to do something
The movement word comes before the intended activity.
The speaker is at home. ผมจะไปกินข้าวที่ตลาด says I will go to eat at the market. The speaker is at school. เพื่อนจะมาเรียนภาษาไทยที่นี่ says the friend will come here to study Thai. The same activity can follow either movement word; the stated viewpoint decides which one fits.
ไปหาเพื่อน commonly means go to see or visit a friend. หา also means look for, as in หาหนังสือ, look for a book. The object and situation matter; visiting a friend does not necessarily mean the friend is lost.
กลับไปทำงาน can describe going back to work away from the speaker. กลับมากินข้าว can describe coming back to eat where the speaker is. A plan tells us what someone intends to do, not that they have already done it.
ผมจะไปกินข้าวที่ตลาดI will go to eat at the market.
เพื่อนจะมาเรียนภาษาไทยที่นี่The friend will come here to study Thai.
ไปหาเพื่อนGo to visit a friend.
หาหนังสือLook for a book.
กลับไปทำงานGo back to work.
กลับมากินข้าวCome back here to eat.
In these everyday patterns, the activity can follow the movement word directly. You do not need a separate word meaning “in order to.”
ไป and มา also have uses beyond physical movement. Here we practise journeys with a clear destination and viewpoint.
Why there is no “and”
Walking, going and buying can form one purposeful trip: how you travel, which way you go and what you go to do. Thai can link those parts directly, without a separate word for “and.”
