Thai ability, permission, advice and necessity
Three kinds of can
In these patterns, ได้, เป็น and ไหว follow the action phrase.
วันนี้ผมไปเชียงใหม่ได้ says I can go to Chiang Mai today: the circumstances allow it. After an action phrase, ได้ has a broad possibility or ability meaning. It can also concern permission; the situation makes the reading clear.
ผมว่ายน้ำเป็น says I know how to swim. After an action, เป็น highlights a learned skill. ผมเดินไหว says I can manage walking: I have enough capacity for the effort. ไหว is useful when tiredness, strength or the demands of an activity matter.
Put ไม่ before the after-action word: ผมว่ายน้ำไม่เป็น, I do not know how to swim; ผมเดินไม่ไหว, I cannot manage walking; วันนี้ผมไปเชียงใหม่ไม่ได้, I cannot go to Chiang Mai today. Keep the action and its object together before these endings.
วันนี้ผมไปเชียงใหม่ได้I can go to Chiang Mai today.
ผมว่ายน้ำเป็นI know how to swim.
ผมเดินไหวI can manage walking.
ผมว่ายน้ำไม่เป็นI do not know how to swim.
ผมเดินไม่ไหวI cannot manage walking.
วันนี้ผมไปเชียงใหม่ไม่ได้I cannot go to Chiang Mai today.
ได้ can sometimes express the same general ability as เป็น or ไหว. Use เป็น when knowing how matters and ไหว when having enough strength or energy matters. A sentence with ได้ alone may not tell you which kind of ability is meant.
Before-action ได้ has other uses; it is not the same construction as the after-action possibility ending.
Permission and a request
Use an action with ได้ไหม to ask whether it is possible or allowed.
ขอนั่งที่นี่ได้ไหมครับ asks may I sit here? In this permission context, ขอ introduces the speaker’s requested action. The ending ได้ไหม asks whether it is allowed. ได้ครับ can grant permission; ไม่ได้ครับ can refuse it.
ช่วยล้างจานหน่อยได้ไหมคะ asks could you help wash the dishes? The familiar help-request frame and the possibility question work together. This asks someone to help, not whether the speaker knows how to wash dishes.
คุณว่ายน้ำได้ไหม can ask whether swimming is possible or whether the person can swim, depending on the situation. To ask specifically about learned know-how, use คุณว่ายน้ำเป็นไหม. For capacity to manage the effort, use คุณว่ายน้ำไหวไหม. A bare possibility question does not tell us every reason behind the answer.
ขอนั่งที่นี่ได้ไหมครับMay I sit here?
ได้ครับYes, you may.
ไม่ได้ครับNo, you may not.
ช่วยล้างจานหน่อยได้ไหมคะCould you help wash the dishes?
คุณว่ายน้ำเป็นไหมDo you know how to swim?
คุณว่ายน้ำไหวไหมCan you manage swimming?
Use the context rather than a one-word translation to decide whether the broad question concerns permission, circumstances or ability. Polite endings keep their familiar statement/question forms.
A short permission reply depends on the permission question; it is not a universal answer to every yes/no question.
A requirement or advice
Put ต้อง for “must” or ควร for “should” before the action.
พรุ่งนี้ผมต้องทำงาน says I have to work tomorrow. ต้อง presents the action as necessary in the situation. คุณควรพักผ่อน says you should rest: it gives advice rather than simply stating an action or a wish.
ควรจะ is also a normal advice form. คุณควรจะพักผ่อน can give the same basic advice here. The extra จะ does not turn the advice into a promise that the person will rest.
For negative advice, put ไม่ before the advice word: คุณไม่ควรทำงานตอนนี้, you should not work now. Compare คุณไม่ทำงานตอนนี้: that says you are not working now; it does not itself recommend anything.
พรุ่งนี้ผมต้องทำงานI have to work tomorrow.
คุณควรพักผ่อนYou should rest.
คุณควรจะพักผ่อนYou should rest.
คุณไม่ควรทำงานตอนนี้You should not work now.
คุณไม่ทำงานตอนนี้You are not working now.
These words do not change with the person. The action stays in its usual form. Strength depends partly on the situation: the necessity word can also give an emphatic recommendation, so it is not always a legal rule.
The exercises specify a requirement or advice; a real conversation can express similar intentions in other ways.
No need to, must not and requests
The basic meanings are “no need to” for ไม่ต้อง and “must not” for ต้องไม่. In conversation, context also matters.
You have a day off and say วันนี้ผมไม่ต้องทำงาน: I do not have to work today. ไม่ comes before ต้อง. In this situation, you are saying that work is not required.
ผมต้องไม่ลืม says I must not forget. The necessity word comes before the negative action. What is required is not forgetting. The order changes which part is negated.
อย่าลืมครับ directly asks someone not to forget. ไม่ควร gives advice against an action, as in คุณไม่ควรทำงานตอนนี้: you should not work now. A reminder and advice are different ways of guiding someone.
วันนี้ผมไม่ต้องทำงานI do not have to work today.
ผมต้องไม่ลืมI must not forget.
อย่าลืมครับDo not forget, please.
คุณไม่ต้องมาโรงเรียนพรุ่งนี้You do not need to come to school tomorrow.
ไม่ต้อง can also be an indirect way to ask someone not to do something. Read the situation and listen to the tone. Saying that something is not needed does not automatically give permission to do it.
This block covers everyday necessity and advice. Detailed signs and formal prohibition wording come later.
Knowing how and managing now differ
Someone can know how to swim but be too tired to do it now. ว่ายน้ำเป็น highlights the learned skill; ว่ายน้ำไม่ไหว says the effort cannot be managed. These statements can both be true. The broad word ได้ needs context to tell us why something is or is not possible.
A gentle way to decline an offer
Someone offers to visit. You can reply ไม่ต้องมาครับ, “There is no need to come,” to decline the offer. The words describe a lack of need, but in this situation they also tell the other person not to make the trip.
