German nominal style: make formal sentences clearer without changing facts

Find the underlying action and its participants before rewriting a dense noun phrase. A genitive may identify an actor or an affected object. If the source does not identify the actor, a passive paraphrase can preserve that uncertainty. Related nouns and verbs may require different complements.

Ask who performs the action

Die Prüfung der Behörde can describe an inspection by the authority or an inspection of the authority. Context may resolve this; if it does not, name the relationship explicitly instead of guessing.

Eine unabhängige Stelle prüft die Behörde.

An independent body inspects the authority.

Learn the noun’s own complement

Beantragen has an accusative object, while Antrag combines with auf for the requested action. In other families the preposition remains: teilnehmen an becomes Teilnahme an. Neither copying nor replacing every verbal preposition is a universal rule.

Der Antrag auf Verlängerung liegt vor.

The application for an extension has been submitted.

Make the sequence clear without inventing an actor

A verbal paraphrase should keep the original timing and certainty. Active voice is useful when the actor is known and relevant. A passive can be clearer and more faithful when the source leaves that actor unspecified.

Nachdem die Erhebung abgeschlossen ist, werden die Daten ausgewertet.

After the survey is completed, the data are analysed.
