GERMAN GRAMMAR · B2

German verb–noun phrases: Entscheidung treffen and zur Verfügung

In combinations such as eine Entscheidung treffen, much of the lexical meaning sits in the noun. Learn the whole expression, including articles and prepositions. A simpler verb may express a similar action while requiring different complements.

The verb is not freely interchangeable

Treffen in a decision expression is not a physical hit. It supplies the conjugated verb for an established phrase. Other support verbs can change whether a sentence describes a state or an action, so replacing them can change the meaning.

Nora trifft morgen eine Entscheidung.

Nora will make a decision tomorrow.

Preserve the small words

In Betracht ziehen has no article before Betracht. Zur Verfügung contains the contraction zu der. Compare a room being available with an organisation actively providing it: stehen and stellen have different roles.

Die Schule stellt uns einen Raum zur Verfügung.

The school makes a room available to us.

Rebuild the complement pattern when simplifying

A noun phrase with Antrag can contain an auf complement. The corresponding verb beantragen takes an accusative object directly. A clear rewrite preserves the action while adjusting the grammar; it does not mechanically carry every preposition across.

Wir beantragen eine Genehmigung.

We apply for a permit.
