BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE · A1

Portuguese -er and -ir verbs: bebemos or abrimos?

Regular -er and -ir verbs share several present endings. Compare eu bebo with eu abro, and ela bebe with ela abre. The core first-person plural differs: nós bebemos, but nós abrimos.

Two families with overlapping endings

For regular -er, the core endings are -o, -e, -emos and -em. For regular -ir, they are -o, -e, -imos and -em. Keep each ending attached to the subject it belongs with. A shared ending makes learning easier without making the infinitive families identical.

Lia vende pão e Bruno divide o café.

Lia sells bread and Bruno shares the coffee.

Use the infinitive to choose the nós form

The infinitive gives you the family: vender leads to vendemos, and dividir to dividimos. Do not choose the ending by the meaning of the action. With everyday a gente, return to the singular form, just as with other verbs.

A gente abre a loja.

We open the shop.

Regular is a useful limit

This reference describes regular present forms. Common verbs can have irregular stems or endings and need individual attention. Later, some familiar-looking forms will also occur in past contexts. For now, make the time requirement explicit when practising a new verb.

Nós partimos cedo.

We leave early, in a present-tense routine.
