BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE · B1

Brazilian Portuguese subjunctive: espero que and duvido que

The present subjunctive fits frames such as espero que venha and duvido que funcione. Read the whole frame: a hope, a doubt and an emotional reaction relate differently to the proposition, even when they share subjunctive forms.

Learn the form inside a useful frame

Rather than treating mood as an isolated ending, connect it to the expression that introduces the clause. A wish or expectation commonly takes a subjunctive complement. The time of the event may still be in the future.

Espero que a visita seja interessante.

I hope the visit is interesting.

Doubt is a stance, not a proof

A sentence expressing doubt tells us about the speaker’s attitude. It does not by itself prove the opposite proposition. Likewise, an indicative form is not a guarantee that a claim has been independently checked.

Duvido que o plano funcione.

I doubt that the plan works.

Keep meaning and form separate

The same mood can occur in a reaction to an event the speaker accepts as real. Later compound forms also distinguish prior completion. Avoid replacing those distinctions with the shortcut that subjunctive always means imaginary.

Lamento que ela esteja doente.

I regret that she is ill.
