Portuguese plurals: livros, papéis, pães and matching articles

Many vowel-ending nouns add -s, but common endings need separate patterns: homem becomes homens, papel becomes papéis and pão becomes pães. Match the article too: os or as, and uns or umas.

Make the phrase plural, not just one word

In standard written agreement, the noun and its article both mark plural number. The noun keeps its gender: masculine o copo becomes os copos; feminine a cadeira becomes as cadeiras. With a plural subject, the verb may need to change as well.

As cadeiras são novas.

The chairs are new.

Learn the useful changing pairs

Final -m commonly becomes -ns, while nouns in -r or -z commonly add -es. Stressed -el can become -éis. Words in -ão do not all have the same plural: compare mãos, pães and corações. Record the actual plural with a new noun.

Os homens são professores.

The men are teachers.

Some does not specify an exact count

The indefinite plural articles uns and umas introduce an unspecified group. They still agree in gender. Bare plural nouns are also possible in Portuguese; choose an article according to the meaning, rather than adding one mechanically to every plural.

Uns copos são pequenos.

Some glasses are small.
