Look for repetition or continuation
The compound pattern combines a present form of ter with a participle. In the common reading here, it connects a series or continuing activity with the current period. It does not simply mean that something happened at least once.
Tenho estudado português nas últimas semanas.
I have been studying Portuguese in recent weeks.
Keep a single completed event distinct
For an event explicitly bounded by yesterday and an ending time, the simple past can state what happened. Do not choose tenho plus participle just because another language would use a compound tense in a superficially similar sentence.
Estudei ontem até as seis.
I studied yesterday until six.
Do not make the participle agree with the subject
After auxiliary ter, the participle stays invariant in this construction. The auxiliary changes with the subject. This differs from passive or adjectival uses where a participle can agree with a noun.
Elas têm estudado juntas.
They have been studying together.
