German narrative tenses: historical present and future in the past

A present-tense verb can describe a past event in a historical frame. Würde plus infinitive can look forward from a past viewpoint without necessarily expressing an unreal condition. When rewriting, preserve both the order of events and the person whose temporal perspective is represented.

Use the whole time frame

A historical date can locate a present-tense sentence in the past. A shift into present tense can make narration immediate, but an accidental unexplained shift may still need revision. The verb form alone does not establish the calendar date.

Im Jahr 1989 fällt die Mauer.

In 1989, the Wall falls.

Whose tomorrow is it?

In a past-tense story, a character’s anticipated departure can be presented through würde. Evaluative words and questions may support free indirect discourse, but an isolated würde form cannot establish that analysis by itself.

Morgen würde sie abreisen. Endlich!

Tomorrow she would leave. At last!

Keep earlier events earlier

The pluperfect can place a completed action before a past reference point. In a summary, a character’s morgen may become am folgenden Tag. Check temporal expressions together with verbs.

Als er ankam, hatte sie den Brief bereits gelesen.

When he arrived, she had already read the letter.
