Who receives the item?
With geben, the receiver takes dative and the item takes accusative. Identify the two roles separately before choosing the articles.
Nora gibt dem Bruder den Schlüssel.
Nora gives the brother the key.
Four forms to recognize
The definite dative articles are dem for masculine and neuter, der for feminine, and den for plural. Read the noun as well as its article.
dem Bruder · der Schwester · dem Baby · den Eltern
the brother · the sister · the baby · the parents, in dative forms
Helping does not require a gift
With helfen, the person helped also takes dative. A receiver is a useful first example, but it is not the definition of every dative. Learn each verb with its case pattern.
Nora hilft der Schwester.
Nora helps the sister.
An article can have more than one role
Compare den Schlüssel, masculine accusative, with den Eltern, plural dative. The same article spelling can represent different combinations of case and number.
Nora gibt den Eltern den Schlüssel.
Nora gives the parents the key.
Start with the receiver before the item
With two full noun phrases, this is a useful neutral starting order. Context can change the order; case still tells you each role. Pronouns follow additional patterns.
Der Bruder gibt der Schwester das Buch.
The brother gives the sister the book.
Why does für use a different case?
A recipient is not automatically dative. Compare the dative object in the first sentence with the phrase after für in the second. The intended receiver is the same; the construction determines the case. Für, ohne, durch, gegen and um take accusative in these everyday patterns.
Nora gibt dem Bruder das Buch. Das Buch ist für den Bruder.
Nora gives the brother the book. The book is for the brother.
