Wegen, trotz and während: German noun phrases or clauses?

Wegen and aufgrund introduce a cause; trotz introduces an obstacle that does not prevent the main event; während can set a time frame. As prepositions, they take noun phrases. A finite clause needs an appropriate conjunction and its own word order.

Choose the relationship first

A storm can cause a cancellation or be an obstacle that fails to stop an event. Changing wegen to trotz changes that relationship. A stylistic rewrite must preserve the original logic rather than merely substitute another connector.

Trotz des Sturms findet die Sitzung statt.

The meeting takes place despite the storm.

Learn a complete formal genitive phrase

In careful writing, masculine and neuter singular phrases commonly mark article, adjective and noun. Dative after wegen also occurs, especially in informal usage. Treat the formal pattern as a register choice, not proof that other speakers’ sentences are meaningless.

Wegen des starken Regens bleiben wir hier.

Because of the heavy rain, we are staying here.

Give a full clause its own structure

A noun phrase such as trotz des Regens can become a clause with obwohl. The finite verb then closes the subordinate clause. If that whole clause comes first, the following main clause starts with its finite verb.

Obwohl es regnet, bleibt der Park offen.

Although it is raining, the park remains open.
